• Nearly 25% of global annual greenhouse gas emissions come from agriculture, forestry and other land use. Moreover, agricultural production is expected to double by 2050, to meet the needs of the world’s growing population.
  • The sector can reduce emissions through reduced land-use change, reduced agricultural emissions, and reduced emissions via demand shifts.
  • SBTi has developed guidelines for this sector (SBTi FLAG)
  • Set near-term FLAG science-based targets: 5-10 year emission reduction targets in line with limiting warming to 1.5°C. Emission reduction activities can be found here (Emission reduction activities – SBTi FLAG)
  • Account for GHG removals in near-term FLAG science-based targets. Carbon removal  activities can be found here (Carbon removal activities – SBTi FLAG)
  • Set long-term FLAG science-based targets that will reduce at least 72% of emission by not later than 2050. These targets should use the SBTi Net-Zero Standard.
  • Set targets for zero deforestation targets for no later than 2025 that are in line with the Accountability Framework initiative (AFi).
  • Businesses with land-based emissions are required to set science-based targets and FLAG science-based targets since all companies produce fossil emissions.
  • The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP) is developing new Land Sector and Removals Guidance for companies to report on land use, land use change, carbon removal and storage, biogenic products and other related topics to assist with mitigation strategies, target setting, and reporting of emissions. The Guidance will be finalised and published in 2023.
