How a UK manufacturing icon achieved SBTi validation in record time
From spreadsheet carbon tracking to SBTi approval in 12 months
Executive summary
Numatic International, the British manufacturer behind the iconic Henry vacuum cleaner and a range of commercial cleaning equipment, partnered with Normative to set and validate science-based targets. With operations spanning multiple countries and subsidiaries, Numatic needed expert support to navigate the rigorous SBTi validation process and establish a robust, audit-ready foundation for their net zero ambitions.
Key results
- Implementation from onboarding to validated targets completed within one year
- SBTi targets approved in just 3 months from submission
- Activity-based data expanded to 95% for key categories and purchased goods and services
- 2024 selected as a high-quality baseline year to support credible long-term tracking
Building on a sustainable foundation
Numatic has been manufacturing durable cleaning equipment in the UK for over 50 years. Best known for the distinctive Henry vacuum cleaner, the company has long prioritized durability, serviceability, and product longevity, reflecting circular economy principles well before sustainability became a formal corporate strategy.
As customer expectations evolved, climate performance became increasingly important in tenders, particularly in the commercial sector. At the same time, Numatic wanted to ensure that its net zero commitments were credible, measurable, and aligned with climate science.
After evaluating various certifications and reporting frameworks, the company chose science-based targets. The decision was driven by the clarity of absolute reduction targets, the credibility of external validation, and the ability to communicate progress internally in a straightforward way.
From spreadsheets to validated targets
Numatic’s sustainability lead, Sophie Millward, had been calculating emissions internally using spreadsheets and activity data across key product categories. While this provided a solid understanding of the company’s footprint, the process was manual, time-intensive, and increasingly difficult to scale across subsidiaries and reporting cycles.
The SBTi validation process introduced additional technical complexity, particularly around FLAG emissions, use of sold products, and biogenic calculations. These areas required detailed assumptions, formal documentation, and multiple rounds of clarification, well beyond routine reporting.
When evaluating carbon accounting platforms, Normative stood out for its intuitive interface, integrated emissions factor databases, and structured SBTi validation support. The addition of a dedicated Climate Strategy Advisor provided the technical expertise needed to navigate validation confidently.
“The SBTi process was more rigorous than we anticipated. Having our Normative Climate Strategy Advisor handle the technical questions and navigate the complexities made all the difference”.
Sophie Millward, Sustainability Lead, Numatic
From onboarding to approved targets, the full process was completed within one year, with validation secured just three months after submission.
Turning targets into action
With validated SBTi targets in place, Numatic is now focused on turning ambition into action. The team is using Normative’s scenario modeling tools to map out reduction pathways and identify the highest-impact opportunities across their operations.
Near-term priorities include deepening supplier engagement to gather product-specific emissions data, working with their material scientists to evaluate recycled and bio-based plastic alternatives, and embedding carbon considerations into procurement decisions.
For Sophie, the key lesson is simple:
“Don’t be scared of the uncertainties. You’re never going to have 100% accurate data. Don’t get hung up on perfecting everything. You’ve got to get an idea of where your emissions are so that you can start tackling it”.
