The second edition of Normative’s Carbon Accountability Report lifts the lid on the challenges, opportunities and benefits that businesses are encountering as they tackle Environmental Social and Governance legislation.

With the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) coming into effect and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence (CSDDD) now on the horizon, such legislation is rapidly expanding in scope and reach. More and more businesses will be impacted every year. In such a rapidly evolving regulatory environment, it’s crucial that sustainability decision-makers keep their fingers on the pulse of how their peers are tackling the issue of compliance, and carbon accounting in general.

That’s why we surveyed 150 sustainability decision-makers at businesses with more than 2000 employees, across the EU and UK to track changing attitudes and actions.

What did we find?

  • Attitudes towards compliance are shifting
    • 77% state their business has changed its attitude to carbon compliance in the last year
    • 86% of sustainability decision-makers believe that compliance with CSRD is a competitive advantage (% of those working for businesses where CSRD is relevant).
  • ESG considerations are playing a bigger role in wider business decision-making processes
    • This has notably increased since 2023 with regards to decisions such as launching new products and selecting energy suppliers
  • However, businesses have a skills gap to fill
    • Of those respondents who face internal challenges, 53% say a knowledge gap in regulatory requirements and ESG frameworks is an issue
