Normative supports the UK government to help SMEs reach net zero emissions
How will countries meet new net-zero commitments?
The race to net zero emissions
2021 will be remembered for the steep acceleration of climate action.
A host of countries have recently committed to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, even though few of them seem to have a clear picture of how they will get there. The upcoming COP 26 in Glasgow will be a critical moment to test the credibility of many net zero targets.
Among the net zero pledges made this year, the UK government stands out with its bold plan to slash its emissions in line with the Paris agreement, including significant efforts to restore nature and protect biodiversity.
One of the pillars of the UK climate plan is the recognition that businesses are the centre of climate action. Companies generate more than two thirds of the global carbon emissions, and the UK government has a special plan to help them achieve net zero emissions.
The UK Business Climate Hub
The UK Business Climate Hub is a platform designed to help SMEs take the first step in their sustainability journey, by committing to become greener and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Becoming more sustainable will help SMEs grow their business, seize new opportunities and be more resilient against the challenges of a changing planet.
Once they’ve made a commitment on the Hub, companies are offered help in reducing their emissions. At Normative we leveraged our experience in developing emission accounting software to help build the Hub platform, and we are happy to be part of a project that recognizes the centrality of businesses in reducing carbon emissions.
In the future, we plan to offer a free version of our emission accounting engine to UK SMEs that pledge to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. We will make use of the grant received by Google.org to develop this free version and empower thousands of SMEs to become climate leaders.
